How to Setup Your New Android Phone

There’s nothing like that new phone feeling. One minute, you’re marveling over your slab of plastic and metal, and the next, you’re panicking over how much work you’ll have to do to set it up and figure out how to use it.

The experience doesn’t have to be so painful, however. If you just bought a new Android phone like the Samsung Galaxy S6 or HTC One (M9+), this steps will help you with a clean, easy-to-use and fully-functional phone, without any clutter or annoyances.

Setup Your New Android Phone

Set up/login to Google account

In order to use your smartphone with Google's apps and services, you need a Google account. For example, if you want to download apps from the Google Play Store or use Gmail for emails. If you already have a Google account, you can enter those details now. Then you will be asked to agree or disagree to some Google services like sharing location data and backing up your information.

Personalize your phone

If you do not like the background image that came with your device, do not despair - every smartphone offers a selection of different backgrounds from which you can choose. The way to do this changes with manufacturer, but look for a Display or Wallpaper option in the Settings Menu. Quite often, if you press on the home screen anywhere for a couple of seconds, a window will appear that lets you change your wallpaper. You can even choose a live wallpaper that moves (and consumes more battery!). You can also add your own images or use photos taken with the camera: perfect for reminding you of the moment you unwrapped your new smartphone!

On some devices, you can also change the font and style of symbols. If none of the options are to your liking, you could try out a new icon pack or test some other backgrounds - of which there are a lot on the net. And if that is still not enough for you, you could try out an alternative launcher which will change the look and functionality of your phone to match your preferences and even your habits. In addition to launchers, there are also lock screen alternatives.

Check Your Google Play Store Settings

You just spent all that time cleaning up your home screen in Step 2; now you have to make sure your new apps don’t crash the party.

Open Google Play Store, swipe to the right, hit “Settings,” and uncheck the box that says “Add icon to Home screen.” Your new apps will be available in the app tray, which appears as a little grid icon at the bottom of each home screen.

You may also want to disable notifications for app updates from the same menu.

Activate Google anti-theft

Another thing I'd recommend is enabling Android Device Manager, the official anti-theft solution from Google. Try it: you'll see that it'll always shows the approximate position of your Android in Google Maps,  as long as your Android is connected to a data signal.

In instances of theft or loss, you can make your mobile phone or tablet emit a loud noise, or even delete all your files remotely.

Install Google apps (but not all of them)

Google Play appsWe've reached a point where using Android without Google apps has become awkward. Luckily, they are of a high quality and add many essential functions. If they're not installed (sometimes they're not, it depends on the manufacturer and version of Android), grab these apps from Google Play:

  • Chrome (browser)
  • Maps (maps and GPS)
  • Drive (storage)
  • Hangouts (chat and messages)
